Ryohei Seto

Ryohei Seto

Dr. Ryohei Seto is a distinguished physicist specializing in the science of soft materials, with expertise spanning colloidal dynamics, suspension rheology, and granular systems. He earned his Ph.D. in Condensed Matter Physics in 2006 and subsequently received a prestigious French government postdoctoral fellowship, conducting research on colloidal gels at the Solid States Physics Laboratory in Orsay and the Chemical Engineering Laboratory in Toulouse. His postdoctoral work continued at leading institutions, including the Technical University of Munich, the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research in Mainz, and the City College of New York. In 2015, he joined the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology as a group leader (senior staff scientist), and since October 2019, he has served as a Principal Investigator at the Wenzhou Institute, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences. He also holds positions as a visiting professor at the Graduate School of Simulation Studies, University of Hyogo, and as a Research Fellow at the Institute of Industrial Science, University of Tokyo, where he collaborates on projects at the intersection of material science and fluid mechanics. Internationally recognized for his groundbreaking research on shear thickening—a phenomenon where fluid viscosity dramatically increases under stress—he has significantly advanced the understanding of complex fluids, with one of his landmark papers receiving the 2015 Publication Award from The Society of Rheology. His influential work and numerous invited talks at international conferences and workshops underscore his profound impact on the field.
